You reverted back to the vandalism version [1] Reconsider! 10:54, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for informing me. My Huggle tool must have got stuck on some kind of revision lock so I never saw the whole content of the page and thus the version containing vandalism. I tried to edit the vandalism out, but Windows crashed (this may have been a fortunate occurence as during the long string of error messages my cursor was hovering dangerously near to the "tag page for deletion" button). TheGrimReaper 11:22, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
Yeah don't worry about it, I've done that couple of times before. Anyhow, just thought you should know. Reconsider! 01:10, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Why unconstructive? It was true! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.2.240.122 (talk) 20:44, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
It may have been true, but it removed vital formatting tags from the page and caused disorder in the wikification. If you wish to re-add it, please insert it in one of the pre-prepared sections and try not to damage the formatting. Also, please cite a reliable source of information. Good job on keeping on top of User:Kestc. Hope this set gets deleted quickly - will reduce the roll-back needs... :) VasuVR (talk, contribs) 17:32, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. :) He seems to be corrupting the transclusion calls, removing the templates. The next time I log on to Huggle, I'll keep an eye on him in case he does it again (and after all, he only has one chance to redeem himself). TheGrimReaper 17:36, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Ooops. Within 5 minutes of above message, he has removed the DB-club on KES Tennis Championship. This is vandalism. Hope you can get someone to deal with this. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:50, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello SparkleGr8, I see you've learned how to edit Wikipedia very quickly. You could try to use some of the links I gave you to assist you. However, I'd like to point out a few things to you. Wikipedia is not a social networking site, and talk pages are only for discussion about collaboration. Please keep this in mind as you explore Wikipedia. TheGrimReaper 13:24, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
I understand i will definately keep that in mind, i thought they were private messages, but thank you for informing me. Sparklegr8 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sparklegr8 (talkcontribs) 13:28, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
There is no current way to keep talk page contents "private" without oversighting them, so the only way to send private messages is by email. Also, please try to sign your posts with --~~~~ at the end. TheGrimReaper 13:32, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Free Internet Chess Server "Vandalism"

[edit]

Hi --

I recently removed a section from "Free Internet Chess Server" [FICS]. You undid this, as you considered it to be vandalism. This is understandable, since removing things is probably what vandals do. However, in this case, I would like to explain why I removed the "Abuse" section that was created under the FICS entry. It is part of a larger, decade-long controversy that I would ask your indulgence in understanding.

FICS is the largest free, totally non-commercial place to play chess on the internet. Its counterpart, the "Internet Chess Club" [ICC][2] is definitely not free or non-commercial. These two services began as a single project, using software that was once identical. (Now it is still extremely similar, though no longer identical. Still, this makes these groups rivals for a customer base, and a one-sided competition of sorts exists between the two. One-sided, because being completely free, such competition would be pointless for FICS.

Unfortunately, our counterpart does not see things the same way. Over the years, they have repeatedly engaged in efforts to disparage or weaken our service. (You can find more on the history of this situation at [3]. The general focus of slander against FICS is to imply that it has an uncontrolled environment where where profanity, lack of decency, and improper behavior abound.

As explained earlier, the software for ICC was once identical and is now nearly so. Their services, including handling of abusive users, is also the same. Yet, there is no corresponding "Abuse" section in their listing. For FICS to have this indicates that FICS has a problem with abuse that ICC does not have. This is not true. Their problems are precisely the same as ours, handled in precisely the same way.

So, as to the Abuse section removal. The section given was removed for these reasons: 1. Some of the information is inaccurate. 2. All of the information is irrelevant. (All servers have abuse problems, not just FICS.) 3. Some of the information is misleading. 4. This section is inequitable with the listing of ICC.

Here are examples of the above, even in the very first sentences of the removed section:

FICS's admins claim to be vigilant against the various forms of abuse that can occur in Internet chess. The most common form of abuse is swearing. FICS's rules of decorum forbid swearing in the general chat area, although swearing is tolerated in some unmoderated channels. Users caught swearing may be kicked off the server but are generally free to reconnect immediately.

  • MISLEADING -- use of the word "claim" indicates doubt that we are actually vigilant about abuse.
  • FALSE -- "The most common form of abuse is swearing". (Disconnection is the most common.)
  • FALSE -- "swearing is tolerated in some unmoderated channels". (Swearing is not "tolerated" on the server anywhere. It often just unseen in such channels.)
  • MISLEADING -- "Users caught swearing may be kicked off the server but are generally free to reconnect immediately." This applies to guests only, and is not generally true in either case. Users and guests that are punished are banned for 24-72 hours and may also be IP-blocked, based on the degree of infraction.

Like most free sites, FICS is staffed by volunteers. It does not have the funds or staff to counter every falsehood or innudendo. But the Wiki is so pivotal to information-gathering that something simply has to be done. I joined the Wiki today only to address this issue.

Therefore, not being conversant with the Wikipedia rules or protocols, I would ask for your kind suggestions about how to proceed from here. I don't want to try to repeat the removal only to have someone undo it for similar reasons. In the interest of fairness, should someone in authority at Wikipedia consider the FICS "Abuse" entry mandatory, ICC should be required to have an identical section in their listing.

Thank you for your time and any assistance you can offer.

FYI: my comment at User_talk:75.74.138.80 discusses the warning you issued to that IP. Subsequent discussion, if any is needed, would probably be better conducted here (or on my talk page if you prefer disjointed threads). I welcome enlightenment if I'm somehow reading the situation wrong. Rivertorch (talk) 23:51, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added template for SuggestBot

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 16:28, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

[edit]

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
